In easy terms, you need to know the search queries related to your product. In more specific terms, you have to know the words that people used to find your product.
Like, if you are selling
backpacks, the search terms would be school bags, cute bags, travel bags, etc.
So where will I find those
search terms?
You need an Amazon Keyword Tool.
Like for Google SEO, there are tools that extract data directly from Google and
show real-time searches and volumes. For Amazon, the story is quite the same.
Helium 10 and Merchant Words are great tool for your long-tail keyword
research.
Once you have the keywords, you
will choose the ones with the highest volume (Monthly-searches) that can drive
traffic and conversion to your product. THIS IS A WRONG STRATEGY!
If I keep it simple, the volume
isn’t the only thing you should be considering in your keyword approach.
The first step is to check your
rankings. The keywords that are already on the first page doesn’t need to be
focused on.
Analyze the keywords on the 2nd
and 3rd pages.
Next is to filter out the less
competitive keywords on those pages and use that in your listing. They will be
easy to optimize and will rank quicker.
Little confused? Let's make it
simple
Whenever you get a sale, Amazon
gets a share of it. It makes sense right?
So Amazon will rank those
listings that have a good sales history and conversion rate to increase its
earning. Do you see where it is going?
In order to achieve maximum
sales, you need maximum impressions. And the best way to do it is to get the
low-ranked keywords optimized in your listing because they will take less time
to rank compared to the high-volume keywords.
So how do we rank for the high
volume keywords?
It takes time. The process for
ranking a high volume keyword isn’t a walk in the park. You will have to put an
extra effort into it to get it on the first page. Those extra efforts may be in
the form of a lot of bleeding through giveaways, PPC – keyword-based targeting
or other types of Ads that can increase the conversion rate.
Let’s get back to the pool – The
first step is to search for the keywords in your niche. If you are selling
helium 10, you can search it via cerebo
or the reverse ASIN Feature. The reverse ASIN is better since it saves-up time
and gives more accurate results as compared to you manually guessing the
keywords.
Here are the steps to follow for
adequate keyword research:
List down the top 5 best selling
competitors in your niche.
Do the keyword research using
the reverse Asin lookup.
Download the keywords in the
excel or CSV form.
Copy and save the search terms
as well
Once you have the keywords, it’s
time to do the selection.
Filter out 10 keywords that have
a volume of 200 to 800: Infuse these keywords into your bullet points
efficiently without making it look dull.
Filter out 5 high volume
keywords: You should infuse these keywords into your title and product
description. In any phase, you should avoid force snuffing of keywords because
that may backfire your performance.
Filter out the most relevant
search terms from your extraction: You can’t use all the search terms in your
listing since there is a character limit of 200. You should filter out the most
relevant ones for your product. Note: Keywords and search terms are different.
If your product has many
variations, the title has to be different for each and different character
limit would apply for each variation.
For the main variation, the
title limit should be 80 Characters. Try to enter the main keyword along with
your brand name there and few specs.
For other variations, you can
write titles up to 200 Characters while using different keywords for each.
I always recommend sellers to
make a consistent listing for each variation except for the title. The use of
irrelevant symbols except the green tick can cause trouble in your ranking
because Amazon may consider you as someone dodging its algorithm.
The Bottom Line
Content is the king. It has to be bulletproof and convincing at the same time. More than the keywords, the focus should always be on making it attractive. The art of snuffing keywords without affecting the quality of the content is what you need to have in writing a perfect listing.
Once you upload your listing,
wait for a week to see the results. This can also be done with an Amazon
Keyword Tool like Helium 10 where you can track the performance of your
keywords and other analytics stuff. Good luck!
